Training Objectives:

This training course teaches Electrical and Mechanical Engineers how to design and implement a control panel board that control, protect and monitor a Diesel-Generator set operating alone or Synchronized as well as electric motors (pumps, compressors…) used in residential commercial and industrial buildings.

A detailed description of all parameters used when programming a “Deep Sea” synchronizing and load sharing module will be presented. Different techniques used for KW and KVAR sharing: Droop, Isochronous, Cross Current Compensation… will be discussed as well as all problems encountered when synchronizing different diesel and generator sizes.

Earthing schemes for single and multiple generators LV low voltage and Medium voltage will be discussed in detail.

Cable sizing and protection for motors, control panel design for different starting methods, star- delta, autotransformer…will be treated in detail

Variable frequency drive VFD problems and protection will be discussed.

 

Learning Outcomes and Skills:

At the end of this training Learners will be able to:

  • Design and implement an Automatic Control Panel Board for Diesel – Generator set.
  • Design and implement a Synchronizing Panel Board.
  • Regulate Governor, AVR…
  • Program and regulate the “Deep Sea” synchronizing and load sharing module.
  • Get accustomed different Earthing scheme and ATS used.
  • Design control panel board for starting an electric motor.
  • Calculate cable size and design protection system for electric motor.
  • Be aware of all problems encountered, bearing and insulation damage …., when using Variable Frequency Drives.

Session 1

Overview on synchronous machine, real alternators, synchronizing process….

Session 2

Regulation of different electronic cards:

  • Gain and stability regulation of AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation)
  • Gain and stability regulation of electronic and mechanical Governor (speed control)
  • Alternator faults and symptoms:
    • AVR and governor failure.
    • Fail to start and stop.
    • High engine temperature, Low oil pressure.
    • Over and under frequency.
    • Loss of residual flux.
    • Burn out of stator, rotor and excitation windings.
    • End of life of the bridge of diode in the excitation circuit.

Session 3

Complete wiring of control panel board to start, protect and monitor an engine set using “Deep Sea” electronic card.

Session 4

  • Complete wiring of control panel board to synchronize different generators.
  • Detailed description of all parameters encountered when programming:
  • Synchronizer.
  • Load sharing module…

  • Problems encountered when synchronizing generators with different diesel engine size and different alternator pitch factor.

Session 5

Generator Earthing and earth fault protection.
